23 players teed off on an morning on which a light drizzle kept things cool for about 6 holes. Some softies even dragged out their dust-covered umbrellas.

The greens were slow due to a thicker carpet than normal required to stop them from drying out from the heat that had turned most of the fairways brown and littered with patches of dirt without any grass cover.
